Sanborn maps are detailed maps created by the Sanborn Map Company to allow fire insurance companies to assess their total liability in urbanized areas. Detailed information about the properties and individual buildings is shown on the maps including the size, shape, and construction of dwellings, fire walls, location of windows and doors, sprinkler systems, and type of roofs. Our maps, dating from 1898 to 1921, show the streets and buildings constituting the town.
A Key is provided below to help navigate the digital color Sanborn Maps. Also, the black and white paper copies can be seen in the town planner’s office during regular Town Hall business hours.
