What is a Comprehensive Plan?

The Comprehensive Plan is Cape Charles' most important document regarding growth, development, and change. It establishes government policy to help guide public and private activities as they relate to land use and resource utilization. The Comprehensive Plan is the basis for land development regulations and decisions (rezonings, conditional use permits), capital improvements (parks, community trails), transportation, and environmental and historic resource protection initiatives.

Why should I care?

The policies and implementation strategies in the Comprehensive Plan ultimately impact your day-to-day experience in the community. The plan informs our future mobility and travel options, what new development should look like, and how we interact with our social, economic, and natural environments. Whether you love Cape Charles just as it is, or feel we need change, sharing your voice in the Comprehensive Plan process is one of the most direct ways you can influence the future of the community.

Who decides what goes into the Comprehensive Plan?

The policies and recommendations in the Comprehensive Plan are based on input from the community and Town staff. Staff and the Planning Commission will spend many hours facilitating conversations, collecting data, and working to understand important issues and shared priorities. The draft content of the plan will be prepared by Town staff. The Planning Commission plays an integral part of the review process and will later recommend a final draft to Town Council for formal adoption.

What's happened so far?

The Town has scheduled a Comprehensive Plan Kickoff Workshop for July 25, which will be held at the Cape Charles Civic Center (500 Tazewell Avenue) at 6:00pm. This will be the first opportunity for residents to help form the update process and give feedback to local government officials about the future of Cape Charles.

The focus of the Kick-off Workshop will be to discuss the Comprehensive Plan update process, project goals, and citizen/stakeholder expectations. Input from citizens at the Kick-off Workshop will be used help to shape the planning process and ultimately the new Comprehensive Plan.

Assisting the update process is the Accomack Northampton Planning District Commission, who will be present at the workshop. The Town Manager and Town Planner will be in attendance, and the Northampton County District 1 Supervisor, John Coker, will attend as well. All Cape Charles Planning Commissioners and a representative of each Town Boards will be asked to attend. If you cannot attend the workshop and want to share your ideas, please email or call the Planning and Zoning Department (contact information below).
