SALARY DOQ/DOE (+) benefits. Cape Charles is an historic town on the Virginia Eastern Shore with approximately 1,000 full-time residents and a significant number of vacation properties. Town is seeking an experienced, progressive and energetic law enforcement executive to serve as a working Chief of Police and lead a department of 4 sworn officers with a $300K budget for FY 2013/2014. This is a chartered position serving at the will of the Town Council and will function as a member of the Town’s management team. The ideal candidate will be a strong and innovative leader who values community, teamwork, citizen participation, accountability and communication. Successful candidates should demonstrate a high level of professional ethics, integrity, and competency and possess exemplary management and analytical skills with the ability to successfully operate and exert influence in a diverse community. Experience with organizational challenges and strategic direction for determining priorities, goals and objectives to meet community needs. Develop and execute the department’s annual budget, implement community-based policing, identify and apply for local, state and federal law enforcement grants, and advise the Town Manager, Mayor and Town Council on all law enforcement matters. Requires a minimum of 5 years’ experience in a variety of police functions including major command responsibilities supplemented by formal training in police administration. Bachelor’s degree preferred but combination of experience and education that meet the minimum qualifications may be substituted. All applicants MUST have an active DCJS police officer certification.
