CODE ENFORCEMENT Jeb Brady, Code Enforcement Officer, attended the Advanced Code Official’s Module in Richmond, Virginia. This training is put on by the state and is required for certain certifications that Jeb will be obtaining within the next year or so. TOWN HARBOR - VA CLEAN MARINA 2008 Smitty Dize, Harbor Master, reports that the harbor will be open on Saturdays beginning March 14th. Due to equipment malfunction, Smitty is in need of a cannon for the Blessing of the Fleet. If anyone has any information or knows someone that might be able to assist in locating a cannon, please contact Smitty Dize at 331-2357. Smitty was contacted by another yacht club this week interested in coming to Cape Charles this summer. Another example of “If you build it, they will come.” Cape Charles is becoming a destination instead of a stop over! A couple more fishing boats showed up this week. Spring is coming! LIBRARY Ann Rutledge, Library Manager, reported that the 100th birthday of Dr. Seuss was celebrated at last week’s Toddler/Preschool Storytime. A Dr. Seuss Party was held with special guest The Cat in the Hat (Kim Dunton). Juice and cookies were served and everyone received a hat to take home. Seventeen (17) children and caregivers attended this great program sponsored by the Women’s Club of Cape Charles. The book displays for March feature books celebrating Women’s History Month, ecology and health. On Monday, March 9 the Friends of the Library and the Library Board will meet with the Library Board of the Eastern Shore Public Library at the Saint Charles Fellowship Hall. TOWN CLERK Libby Hume, Town Clerk, reported the following information: Four (4) Freedom of Information requests were processed. The application deadline for the Town Treasurer position is March 13, 2009 and ten (10) applications have been received to date. Upcoming Meetings:
PLANNING DEPARTMENT Tom Bonadeo, Town Planner, reported that he has received three (3) applications that will be reviewed by the Historic District Review Board at their meeting next week. RECREATION Tad Taborn, Recreation and Youth Director, is pleased to announce that the location of the skateboard facility will be one of the four lots the Town of Cape Charles owns on Madison Avenue to the north of the old High School. This will be convenient to the other Town youth activity facilities (tennis, basketball, volley ball, etc.) and the Recreation Coordinator’s equipment shed. Town citizen Jim Mahaffy has completed seeking donations from residents and businesses to pay for the cost of materials and installation of the facility and has enlisted the volunteer help of adults, parents and skateboarders to build the facility. The Town is planning to begin construction this month. We hope to have the facility "open for business" early next month. Tad plans to have two Grand Opening events: First, a mentoring work session for skateboarders, parents and experienced (adult) skateboarders to accept signed Waivers, inspect equipment, recommend improvements, demonstrate techniques and review safety procedures. Second, a special GRAND OPENING to watch the next generation of agile skateboarders trying out the new skateboard facility. The two dates will be announced in the coming weeks. TOWN MANAGER Heather Arcos, Acting Town Manager, reports that the Town Council will begin their work on the FY 2010 budget this month. Based upon current economic conditions, the Gazette will become a bi-weekly newsletter. In an effort to reduce costs, a notification will be emailed to all subscribers with a link to the Gazette, which will appear on the Town’s website – www.capecharles.org.
