CODE ENFORCEMENT Jeb Brady, Code Enforcement Officer, reported that he met with two new prospective businesses regarding the needed permits to change the use of their buildings. Should any existing business owners or new business owners have any questions about permits or fire inspections please feel free to call or email. TOWN HARBOR - VA CLEAN MARINA 2008 Smitty Dize, Harbor Master, reported that business has been a little better this month with commercial activity beginning to pick up. Smitty is continuing his work regarding the coordination of the Second Annual Blessing of the Fleet which is scheduled for April 3, 2009 from 5:30 PM – 9:30 PM and the First Annual Blessing of the Fleet 5K Walk/Run on April 4, 2009. Registration will begin at 8:15 AM. Smitty received a letter from South Port informing him that they wish to exercise their option to move MAMA (Mid-Atlantic Maritime Academy). Staff is working with both parties to insure a smooth transition. Two (2) yacht clubs were booked for future visits this past week:
We would also like to welcome a new maritime training school to town – PAPA (Pacific-Atlantic Professional Academy. As of this week there will be three (3) annual slips available beginning April 1, 2009. Staff will begin calling those of you on the waiting list this week. The waiting list can be viewed at the Town Office bulletin board or at the harbor.
LIBRARY Ann Rutledge, Library Manager, reported that the Toddler/Preschool Storytime was held last Thursday and a total of five (5) children and their caregivers attended. Last week's theme was "Be My Valentine!" The six (6) week Writing Workshop, led by published author Margaret Richard, continued this week and four (4) people attended. On Wednesday, March 18, 2009, from 7:00 PM – 9:00 PM, the Library will resume the workshop series entitled "The Spiritual Teaching of Eckhart Tolle". This series will be held on the 1st and 3rd Wednesdays of every month and will be led by Ettore Zuccarino. Eckhart is not aligned with any particular religion or tradition. Through his writings and seminars, his simple yet profound teachings have already inspired countless people throughout the world to find inner peace and greater fulfillment in their lives. RECREATION DEPARTMENT Tad Taborn, Children & Youth Advisor, reported that the February Freeze, which was held this past Saturday, raised over $4500 for the Habitat for Humanity. Tad reported that he is gathering information and is working to establish a sign-up process for the proposed Skateboard Park. PUBLIC WORKS/PUBLIC UTILITIES DEPARTMENTS Dave Fauber, Director of Public Works, reported the following:
POLICE DEPARTMENT Chief Eder is continuing to receive calls for service within the Town of vehicles which have been entered and rummaged through. REMINDER: Please keep your vehicles locked and bicycles secured at home. If anyone spots persons moving about on the streets late at night or early in the morning should contact dispatch at 678-0458. Congress At Your Corner with Second District Congressman Glenn Nye Talk to Congress without leaving your neighborhood! On Saturday, February 21, 2009, from 1:30 – 3:00 PM, Congressman Glenn Nye will hold community office hours at the Cape Charles Coffee House. Come meet Congressman Nye, discuss the issues that you care about and get assistance working with federal agencies like Social Security, Medicare and Veterans Benefits.
