The purpose of this electronic newsletter is to pass factual, informative and timely information to the citizens of Cape Charles and to any other individuals who have a business, property, travel or historical interest in our Town.

The information contained in this newsletter is considered to be the "official word" on the Town’s activities as noted by our Town Manager. The Cape Charles Gazette is a news source which reports upon weekly events, upcoming Town activities, articles of interest to our citizens, Town projects, safety & security issues, and emergency announcements.

CODE ENFORCEMENT

Jeb Brady, Code Enforcement Officer, reported that he and Town Planner Tom Bonadeo have completed their project regarding the "911" addresses on Bayshore Road to give some consistency to the addresses on this road for future use and also for first responders.

Jeb met with an owner regarding ongoing Code Enforcement cases on Madison and Randolph Avenues.

TOWN HARBOR - VA CLEAN MARINA 2008

Smitty Dize, Harbormaster, reported that the Harbor Crew continues their work on replacing the floor in their office and Harbor restrooms.

Smitty reported that the second Blessing of the Fleet meeting was held on Friday, February 6th.  He thanked everyone who attended for all the help they are providing for this upcoming event. The Second Annual Blessing of the Fleet festivities will be held on April 3 – 4, 2009.

Smitty also reported that two (2) yachting clubs have been booked for this summer.

LIBRARY & TOWN CLERK

Ann Rutledge, Library Manager, reported that the Toddler/Preschool Storytime was held last Thursday and a total of five (5) children and their caregivers attended. Last week's theme was "I Love Cats!".

On Wednesday, February 4, 2009, the Library began a 6-week Writing Workshop led by published author Margaret Richard. One (1) person attended the first workshop.

On Saturday, February 7, 2009, the Friends of the Library hosted Slammin' at the Hall, a Family Poetry Slam at the St. Charles Parish Hall. All poets, would-be poets and poetry lovers were invited to participate. Fifteen (15) people attended the poetry slam, which is an event where poets perform their works and are judged by members of the audience. Light refreshments were served and everyone had a good time.

The book displays for February celebrate Black History Month with a selection of biographies of African Americans and a Valentine’s Day display featuring romance titles.

Tuesday, February 17, 2009:

Broadband Management Team Regular Meeting starting at 2:00 PM at the Town Hall.
Historic District Review Board Meeting starting at 4:30 PM at the Town Hall.
Wetlands Board Public Hearing and Regular Meeting starting at 6:00 PM at the Town Hall.

RECREATION DEPARTMENT

Tad Taborn, Children & Youth Advisor, reported that he has been preparing for the February Freeze which is scheduled for Saturday, February 14, 2009. Registration starts at 11:00 AM at the Cape Charles beach.

Tad is working with Town Citizens and staff to finalize a plan to bring to Council to construct a skateboard park.

Tad reported that he has accepted an invitation to speak at a rotary club luncheon and that he is continuing his training to obtain his Commercial Driver’s License (CDL).

Tad is doing some research to secure future permanent space for the youth program in order to further his goals of providing an after-school program and indoor activities for the youth of Cape Charles.

PLANNING DEPARTMENT

Tom Bonadeo, Town Planner, reported that he, along with Vice-Mayor Chris Bannon, attended the ESVBA Broadband Meeting which was held in Onancock and was conducted with the Department of Housing and Community Development (DHCD) which is the granting authority. Cape Charles has a $500,000 grant to extend the broadband network into the Town.

On Wednesday, February 4, 2009, Tom, along with Vice-Mayor Chris Bannon and Consultant Bob Panek, attended the VML Legislative Day program.

Tom participated in the "Town Hall" meeting for the citizens and business owners of Cape Charles to hear input regarding the County’s rezoning plan. Several of the County Supervisors and Planning Commissioners were in attendance. The room was overflowing with members of the general public and a lot of good input was received.

PUBLIC WORKS/PUBLIC UTILITIES DEPARTMENTS

Dave Fauber, Director of Public Works, reported that the painting inside the municipal building has been completed.  We have completed the mulch on Mason Ave.

Dave also reports the Utilities Departments are continuing with routine work.

POLICE DEPARTMENT

Chief Eder has received calls of service on Washington Avenue, Monroe Avenue, and Nectarine Street of vehicles which have been rummaged through. A reminder to please keep your vehicles locked and bikes secured at home. If anyone spots movement on the streets late at night or early in the morning to contact dispatch at 678-0458.

Chief Eder reported that he has received complaints about vulgar language from groups in the Town Park and would like to remind everyone that this should not be taking place.  All citizens utilizing the Town facilities should act accordingly.

Chief Eder reminds everyone to lock and secure your vehicles at all times, as well as to use racks and bicycle locks whenever possible.

TOWN MANAGER

A public Information Session held on Saturday, February 7, 2009 to inform the public on the Council’s decision to reject the Webtide unsolicited proposal. The public asked questions and received answers by the Town Consultant, Bob Panek. It was a well attended session.

Heather Arcos continues to work to finalize the Trail Project in Central Park. The Council approved staff to put the project out to bid at the Council meeting last month. At this time, the bid package is currently in the review process with the Virginia Department of Transportation Enhancement Program.


HABITAT FOR HUMANITY

The Habitat for Humanity will hold its 13th Annual FEBRUARY FREEZE on Saturday, February 14, 2009 at the Town of Cape Charles Beach Front.

Registration starts at 11:00 AM and the "Dip" takes place at 12:00 NOON!

Prizes for the Highest Sponsor Dollars and Best Costume. Music will be provided for the "Dip" and Lunch is available at the Trinity UMC of Cape Charles. Lunch is FREE for any "Dipper" who has raised $35.00 or more and a charge of $5.00 for you "Non Dippers".

The Master of Ceremonies for this event is the Town's Youth & Recreation Advisor Tad Taborn.
