Welcome to the official Town of Cape Charles Newsletter. This publication is available by submitting your email address to gazette@capecharles.org or by contacting the Town Office at 757-331-3259 x10.
The information contained in this newsletter is considered to be the "official word" on the Town’s activities as noted by our Town Manager. The Cape Charles Gazette will be a news source that will report weekly events, upcoming Town activities, articles of interest to our citizens, Town projects, safety & security issues, and emergency announcements. We hope that you will enjoy receiving the Cape Charles Gazette. For additional information please go to the Town’s website at http://www.capecharles.org/or contact us at gazette@capecharles.org. References to external websites are for information purposes only. The Town makes no representation as to the accuracy of information on such sites, and reference to such sites is not intended as an endorsement by the Town of any materials or opinions expressed on such sites. HARBOR Smitty Dize, Harbor Master, reported that the Harbor Crew continues to update the Town Harbor’s Rules & Regulations to comply with the Harbor’s new Virginia Clean Marina status. Smitty noted that the Crab Dredgers did not receive permission to continue their work and will have to wait another few months on a final legal judgment. Smitty opined that this was not good news for either our Watermen or the Town of Cape Charles. The Town Harbor only had one (1) commercial fisherman enter the Harbor last week. LIBRARY & TOWN CLERK Ann Rutledge, Library Manager, reported that the Library will be offering a Be Not Afraidbeginner computer class at the Library on Thursday, December 11 & Friday, December 12, 2008 from 1:30 PM to 4:30 PM. The class will be taught by Friend of the Library Joan Natali. The charge is $10.00 per person. Please contact the Library at 757-331-1300 for further information. Anyone who is interested should sign up ASAP since the class size is limited. The Library is also preparing for the Christmas holiday with a display of Christmas fiction for your reading pleasure. Libby Hume, Town Clerk, reported that there will be an "open" Work Session regarding the Cape Harbor Project on Thursday, December 4, 2008 starting at 5:30 PM at the Town Hall. The public is most welcome to attend this Work Session. Please contact Libby at 757-331-3259 x10 for additional details. There will be a meeting of the Historic District Review Board on Tuesday, December 16, 2008 at 2:00 PM at the Town Hall. The Town had nine (9) citizens step forward to volunteer to serve on Town boards and commissions. We thank them for volunteering and Libby noted the following positions as being open: Two (2) or possibly three (3) positions open for the Planning Commission (the third position is unknown at this time and is based on a potential job offer regarding one of the Planning Commission members), one (1) for the esteemed Library Board, one (1) for the Board of Zoning Appeals & one (1) for the Wetlands & Coastal Dune Board. RECREATION Tad Taborn, Children & Youth Advisor, reported that Postmaster Coretta Alston, Cape Charles Post Office, approached the Town with the idea of hosting a Happy Holiday Parade 2008 in Cape Charles sponsored by our friends at our Post Office. Coretta would like to stage a short parade through the Town of Cape Charles and conduct a scavenger hunt prior to the parade. The parade has been scheduled for Sunday, December 21, 2008 starting at 5:00 PM. For additional details please contact Postmaster Alston at 757-331-4927 or email her at coretta.l.alston@usps.gov. Everyone is welcome to participate in this First Annual Happy Holiday Parade and volunteers for the event are most welcome. Please contact Coretta for additional information at the number & e-mail listed above. POLICE Chief David Eder reported that the Cape Charles Police Department issued sixteen (16) Traffic Summons in November 2008 for speeding within the Town limits. They also had (8) arrests in the Town and this included two (2) citizens on DUI charges. Chief Eder reminds everyone again that the general area is starting to experience a "rise" in cases involving destruction of property and Breaking & Entering (B & E) cases. This "rise" may be directly related to the economy and the public is urged to secure their possessions and use a common sense approach such as locking their homes when they depart, keep iPods, GPS devices, cameras etc. out of view in their vehicles and not leaving yard equipment, bikes & tools unattended. ASSISTANT TOWN MANAGER & TOWN MANAGER Mayor Dora Sullivan & members of the Town Council met in a Closed Session with representatives from Bay Creek on Monday, December 1, 2008 regarding Annexation issues. The talks will continue to reach a mutual agreement. Citizens are encouraged to go to the http://www.capecharles.org/ Web site and review the Annexation Agreement on that site. The Town can not legally answer any "contract" questions at this point regarding the Annexation. The Holiday Season is upon us once again and we respectfully ask our citizens to use good judgenment when celebrating this time of the year. Please don’t drink & drive and appoint a designated driver BEFORE you start the party. If you look around the Town you might notice that there are signs encouraging our citizens to become more involved with the Town’s activities. A good government is one that is open & transparent to all that it serves. The only way this can happen is through citizen participation, knowledge and questions. Thank you again for the privilege & the opportunity to serve this Town and the great people who reside in it. FACTOID: The Gazette alone had over 1200 "hits" on the Town’s web site last month. The Town is happy that other people are finding our little Town so fascinating! There were over 14,000 total "hits" on the web site in November.
