Weather Alert Cape Charles

HANNA IS LIKELY VISITOR

From the Governor's office:

RICHMOND - Governor Timothy M. Kaine declared a state of emergency today, directing state agencies to take all reasonable actions necessary to protect the health and safety of Virginians from the potentially damaging effects of Tropical Storm Hanna.

"Current forecasts predict Hanna will bring tropical storm force winds to Virginia, causing coastal flooding and the very real possibility of tornadoes and power outages," Governor Kaine said. "Virginians should listen to their local government representatives and local news media for instructions for the duration of the storm."

In declaring a state of emergency, the governor authorizes state agencies to identify and preposition resources for quick response anywhere they are needed in Virginia. The Virginia Department of Emergency Management has staffed the Virginia Emergency Operations Center with response team members from several state agencies and other affiliated organizations. In addition, the Virginia State Police, Virginia National Guard and Virginia Department of Transportation have additional personnel on standby to respond to areas in the storm's path.

More information about what Virginia is doing to prepare for Tropical Storm Hanna is available at www.vaemergency.com.

Detailed information about how Virginians can stay safe during an emergency is available at www.ReadyVirginia.gov and www.ListoVirginia.gov.

CAPE CHARLES INFORMATION

The Town Offices will close tomorrow, September 5, at 1:00 PM in preparation for Hanna which is expected to arrive in our area late Friday evening. The Town Harbor will secure no later than 5:00 PM.

The Town suggests that citizens go to www.weather.com for current updates or tune in to local radio and television stations.

As of 2:00 PM on the date listed above the Town of Cape Charles will activate the Town’s Emergency Operations Plan (EOP). The Town has made detailed plans for the Public Works Department, Police Department, Code Enforcement and the Harbor regarding a response to Hanna. This response will be in the form of clearing debris, road closures, protection of the Town’s critical infrastructures, alerting the population to imminent danger and storm water management.

Citizens are reminded that they are individually responsible for their own safety and well being. This means that everyone should be ready for power outages, water issues, ensuring they have food, the proper medications, securing their boats at the Harbor and the well being of their other family members & pets.

Business owners should remove all tables and chairs from the sidewalks, take outdoor signs down, move planters indoors, remove all debris from the front of their stores so they don’t become "unintended boats" that block our storm drains and make certain your business is locked before you leave for the day.

If you have a medical condition that prevents you from being completely mobile, please e-mail Chief David Eder at chief@capecharles.org so the Police Department can check on you or your loved ones. Please include your HOME ADDRESS, TELEPHONE NUMBERS, PERSON(S) at the residence & NATURE OF THE ILLNESS (for example; bed ridden, elderly with walker etc.).

The Town urges all citizens to pay attention to the weather alerts on the television and radio and if there is a notification to evacuate the area we respectfully request that you follow the directions to do so. The Town will look to the Eastern Shore Emergency Operation Center for further directions and information regarding the location of the nearest shelters.

We are now in the Hurricane Season and adverse weather is likely to occur on the Eastern Shore and everyone needs to be "individually ready".

The Town of Cape Charles has recently installed a Flood/Severe Weather Warning Siren in the Historic District of Town. It is located on Mason Avenue across the street from the service station. In the event that the siren goes off, please tune to one of the following broadcast stations for severe flood or weather information and directions.
