Roberta Newman ~ Newroads Consulting Phone: (757)331-3151 "Snap, Crackle and Pop" Goes the Turtles (Virginia Beach, VA) – Three rehabilitated Kemp’s Ridley sea turtles dubbed "Snap, Crackle and Pop" will be released by the Virginia Aquarium Stranding Response Team with a crowd of onlookers from the Eastern Shore Town of Cape Charles August 26, at 11:00 AM. After the recent release of rehabilitated loggerhead sea turtle Hampton at Cape Charles, Town Manager Joe Vaccaro invited the Stranding Response Team to return and conduct a free educational outreach program for its citizens. This will begin prior to the release at 9:30 AM at the Gazebo on Bay Avenue. The Team will give a brief presentation on their mission which is to promote the conservation of marine animal species through stranding response, research, rehabilitation and education. An educational display will also be featured which will include a slideshow, informational banners, dolphin and turtle artifacts, and a flipper bone puzzle made from an actual stranded humpback whale. Assistant Stranding Coordinator Christina Trapani said, "Once veterinarians gave Snap, Crackle and Pop approval for their release, we agreed that Cape Charles would be the perfect place for them to begin their second chance since the Chesapeake Bay is a critical habitat for these amazing animals." The public is invited to attend both the release and the outreach program.
Snap, Crackle and Pop represent the most endangered of the sea turtle species – the Kemp’s Ridleys. These juvenile sea turtles are about the size of dinner plates and range in weight from 6 – 10 pounds. The Marine Mammal Stranding Center located in Brigantine, NJ, initially rescued them from the cooling water intake canal of a local nuclear generator station during the month of July. They all had various cuts and bruises and needed medical attention before being reintroduced into the wild. After their transfer (July 14) to the Virginia Aquarium Marine Animal Care Center, their course of treatment included x-rays, antibiotics, wound cleansing and healthy meals of vitamin supplements, herring, squid and shrimp. Trapani added, "Pop, the smallest Ridley, prefers squid tentacles with no heads and from the surface only. Snap chews up and spits out herring and prefers shrimp with the shell removed. Crackle consumes all!" To report a dead or live stranded marine mammal or sea turtle call the Virginia Aquarium Stranding Response Program 24-hour hotline at (757)437-6159.
