Lead Paint and the Renovation, Repair and Painting Rule (RRP)

In an effort to make citizens aware of EPA regulations regarding Lead-Based Paint, the Town is providing this information to its citizens to inform them of the dangers of Lead-Based Paint and actions that should be taken when any RRP projects are performed on your property. There have been some recent concerns with contractors performing renovations on homes within the Historic District which were built prior to 1978.

The U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) has issued the Renovation, Repair and Painting Rule (RRP) to protect against the risk of lead poisoning. It requires that firms performing renovation, repair and painting projects that would disturb lead-based paint in pre-1978 homes, child care facilities and schools be certified by the EPA and that they use certified renovators who are trained by EPA-approved training providers, to follow lead-safe work practices. All homes built prior to 1978 must be treated as if they contain lead until a test can prove otherwise.

If your house was built prior to 1978 and you want to hire someone for a RRP project, ask to see their required EPA certification. You may also click here to search for EPA certified renovation firms. The Town also advises you to review the EPA webpage regarding Lead-Based Paint for more important information.

this information is provided to you to ensure your safety and well-being. If you have any questions or concerns, please contact Jeb Brady at (757) 331-3259 ext. 22 or via email at codeofficial@capecharles.org.

Don’t Forget Fire Safety after the Earthquake

In the aftermath of yesterday’s 5.8 earthquake and multiple aftershocks, the Virginia Department of Fire Programs and the State Fire Marshal’s Office encourage Virginia residents to be vigilant concerning possible fire safety concerns around their homes and businesses.

Chimneys, gas or fuel oil lines and tanks, heating equipment, and overall structural integrity may have been compromised.  These components may not show visible damage.  Individuals are advised to contact licensed inspectors if they have concerns regarding these or any other potential post-earthquake issues.

Please click the following link for recommended Earthquake Fire Safety guidelines from the U.S. Fire Administration.
