Cape Charles - A Beachfront Treasure on the Eastern Shore of Virginia
Story by Bonna L. Nelson, Photography by Bonna Nelson and Angie Myers
Have you ever wondered what's cookin' at the end of the roads off of Route 13 on the Eastern Shore of Virginia -- that narrow peninsula surrounded by the great Chesapeake Bay on one side and the mighty Atlantic Ocean on the other? Whenever we travel to or from the Chesapeake Bay Bridge-Tunnel, I always wish that we had more time to explore that area, expecting to find quaint towns, wonderful beaches and delicious seafood.
My wish came true when we recently had the opportunity to explore one of those towns off of Rt. 13 - historic Cape Charles, VA, on the southern tip of the Delmarva Peninsula, and it did not disappoint. Cape Charles is a warm, welcoming, small town on the open waters of the lower eastern Chesapeake Bay ...

With spanking new docks on the harbor front and a can-do attitude, Cape Charles, Va., takes a big step toward prime time.
I'd only been back in Cape Charles for about ten minutes, but it was already clear to me that something had changed. The new floating docks--44 new slips plus T-heads, as it turns out--were the obvious outward sign, as was a local restaurant open for dinner on a Sunday night in what might still constitute the off-season.

Jaunts with Shantella Sherman.
Even with an uncertain economy, Americans have not lost their desire to travel. Many have, however, decided to take pleasure trips to destinations closer in proximity to their homes and for shorter amounts of time, instead of longer, more extravagant vacations. Typically referred to as "jaunts," each month, The Washington Infomer will provide readers with a lood at some of the region's best bets for quick excursions. Jaunts are usually reached by car or train in less than four hours and are best enjoyed when they include restaurants, accommodations, and local sites often overlooked by mainstream tourism guides.
